Brasch family papers, 1891-1920.

Collection consists primarily of letters written by the children of Otto and Caroline Brasch to their brother Frederick E. Brasch. The letters date from 1891 to 1920 and originate from San Jose, Santa Clara, San Francisco, and Hawaii. The letters from Caroline Brasch describe the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, and there is an account of a camping trip made by Frederick and Max Brasch and a friend to the ocean at Pescadero and Santa Cruz in 1894.

Otto and Caroline Brasch immigrated from Germany during the 1870's and encouraged their children to improve themselves by writing letters. Frederick Brasch attended Stanford University (1897-1899) and was chief of the Smithsonian Division of the Libraray of Congress for many years. From 1948 until his death in 1967 he was curator of the Frederick E. Brasch collection on Sir isaac Newton the the history of scientific thought. Brasch, Frederick E. (Frederick Edward), 1875-1967

Frederick E. Brasch was educated at Stanford University (1899), the University of California (1901), and Harvard (1916). He worked as a librarian at Stanford, in Chicago, St. Paul, MN, and in Washington, D.C. before becoming chief of the Library of Congress scientific collection in 1925. He served as corresponding secretary of the history of science section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1920 through 1928. Brasch died in 1967.
